Trying something new!
Something that makes foiling week in Garda so great isn’t just the boats with large established fleets racing, but it’s also a place to showcase new types of foiling equipment that is free for all competitors to use. We seized this opportunity at the end of the event to try some of what was available, first was a go on a boat called the BirdyFish. This is a fun, two person, low speed, easy to foil boat which Chloe and I had a absolute laugh in. Although we love our racing, it’s always great to just head out on the water just to foil around and have fun! If your new to foiling and ever have a chance to have a go we would highly recommend.
Next we made our way over to the Foil Drive tent. We’ve been seeing these foil boards all over Europe and have wanted to have a go for months now. Thankfully they had multiple boards ready to go and we jumped on the them. These boards are a bit different to the ones most people have seen, they have the motor part way up the mast (foil upright) so that once you’re up and going just the foil is in the water. This is great for surfing waves or helping to get up when wingfoiling.
It’s safe to say at the start we were very comedic to watch, only lasting about 5 seconds before we’d fall off and as you can see we didn’t get too far out of the water😂. After about half an hour though we started to get the hang of it, and now we are hooked! Definitely something we are going to be adding to the list goods we’ll be taking to our events and training. Can’t wait to try these in some waves!
